Laker Tennis Earns a Pair of Wins against Aquinas College

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University Men's and Women's Tennis teams took on the Aquinas College Saints at the MVP Sportsplex in Grand Rapids, Mich. on Saturday, Oct. 2 with the men's team winning by a score of 7-0 and the women's team earning a 6-1 victory. 

The men's team took the doubles point against the Saints as Juho Kantola and Harris Rehan won their match by a score of 6-3, Aaron Osmond and Ali Sahibzada recorded a 6-2 victory, and Diego Penz and Raul Velasco Garcia won by a score of 6-3. 

In singles play, all six Lakers won their matches in two sets against their Aquinas opponent. Kantola, the team's top singles player, won his match in consecutive 6-0 set wins. Taneja played in the No. 2 spot for the Lakers, and secured 6-4 and 6-3 wins to earn the victory. The Lakers No. 3 and No. 4 singles players, Raul Velasco Garcia and Aaron Osmond, both made their Laker debuts against Aquinas. Velasco Garcia won his match by scores of 6-4 and 6-3 while Osmond recorded 6-0 and 6-3 set wins. Sahibzada won his match by a first round score of 6-3 and a 7-5 victory in the second set. Penz, played as the team's No. 6 singles player, and posted 6-2 and 7-5 wins to lead the Lakers to a perfect 7-0 victory. 

The women's team took the doubles point by a score of 2-1. Milena Baigorria and Maddie Whip, playing as the team's top pair, fell by a score of 6-3. The Lakers second pair of Claudia Sole and Muskaan Ranjan won their match by a score of 6-1. The Saints only had five players available for the match so the Lakers won the third set by default. 

Baigorria played as the Lakers No. 1 singles player and fell in a tough three-set match against Aquinas' Sofia Gomez. Baigorria won the first set by a 6-1 score, dropped the second set (4-6) and fell in the tiebreaker set by a score of 8-10. 

Ranjan won her set by scores of 6-3 and 7-5 as the Lakers No. 2 singles player. No. 3 Claudia Sole, No. 4 Maddie Whip, and No. 5 Keegan Malpass each won their matches in decisive fashion. Sole and Malpass both won by scores of 6-0 and 6-1 while Whip made her Laker debut with back-to-back 6-0 wins in her match. 

Julia Fraile Raton, the Lakers No. 6 singles player, won by default as Aquinas did not have a sixth player available for the match. 

What's Next

Both teams will wrap up the fall season next week as the Lakers compete against Alma on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 12:00 p.m. and Lawrence Tech on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 9:00 a.m.
