Women's Basketball: Aguzzi's Massive Night Lifts Lakers To Victory At Bud Cooper Gym

Box Score "Everybody eats."

That was the message Lake Superior State Head Coach emphasized in the days leading up to their GLIAC matchup against Davenport on Thursday. "Everybody eats." Share the ball, spread it around, create shots for your teammates.

Did they ever.

Lake Superior State (7-18, 4-13 GLIAC) passed for 16 assists on 24 made shots in a 74-67 win over Davenport (7-18, 5-12 GLIAC) at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Lara Aguzzi scored 24 points, shooting 5-for-10 from three in the game and scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter.

Laker Head Coach Grace Howrigon praised the junior, not just for her outstanding evening, but her drive throughout the season. She said, "Lara is one of the most incredible shooters I've ever seen. Her growth this year has been an incredible start to finish. And she's allowed us to coach her. She's listened to everything and put it into place. What she did today was phenomenal. She needs to be very proud of how she's grown this year, because it's incredible."

Aguzzi hit three triples in the fourth quarter and played tremendous defensively to seal the win for LSSU. The game saw the lead change hands several times in the fourth quarter, until Chloe Watson's jumper put the Lakers ahead 69-67, a lead LSSU wouldn't relinquish.

The Lakers got out in transition during the game, scoring 29 points off of 17 Panther turnovers. LSSU forced 13 steals, producing outstanding numbers against a team that hasn't turned the ball over much lately.

"One of our goals was 12 steals, because we wanted to score in transition," said Howrigon.  "We feel like we haven't been disrupting enough. So when I said 13 steals in the locker room, the players went crazy. They were super geeked about that because we went in with that goal. That's a that's a stat I'm really proud of. That is the most points we've scored off turnovers in a single game all year."

The Lakers defended very well in the fourth quarter as well, especially considering both Dara Capaldi and Grace Bradford came into the quarter with four fouls each.

"They were massive down the stretch," said Howrigon. "They're tough to guard. You put them on the block against a lot of people in the league, they can guard them. They do everything for us."

Aguzzi's play drew praise from the coach as well. "She was a key piece of our victory tonight. At the end of the game, she made some massive defensive plays that got us the ball back. She drew that offensive foul in the post in crunch time."

Aguzzi finished with four rebounds and two steals as well. Grace Bradford scored 17 for LSSU, grabbed seven rebounds, passed for three assists and stole the ball three times. Watson scored 12 for the Lakers, including the shot that put them in the lead for good. She also snatched four boards and tallied three steals with three assists.

Howrigon credited her team with an excellent response from the Ferris State contest on Monday.

"We played really well defensively. However, the ball was not being shared on offense. So the past two days, all they've heard me say is pass to your friends. And we've been drilling it. We've been watching film on it. And we just got real about it. We've got to put 40 minutes together on both sides of the ball. And today we did that. And we had multiple people double digit scoring. We had assists. We had a healthy assist-to-turnover ratio."

With Senior Day and Alumni Day coming up against Grand Valley State on Saturday, the Lakers will honor past greats and one of their current legends in Grace Bradford. Tipoff against GVSU is 1:00 PM at the Bud Cooper Gym. Buy your tickets online or at the Norris Center box office.
