SAULT STE. MARIE - Senior captain Troy Schwab
thwarted Bowling Green's comeback by scoring his second goal of the
game early in the third period Saturday, and teammates Steven
Kaunisto and Rick Schofield scored shootout goals to preserve a
four-point weekend for the Lake Superior State hockey team.
LSSU (3-3-2 overall, 3-2-1-1 Central Collegiate Hockey
Association) tied BGSU 4-4 and won the shootout 2-1. Bowling Green
State (3-5-2 overall, 2-3-1-0 CCHA) picked up one point for the
series.
The Falcons overcame a 3-0 first-period deficit by scoring four
second-period goals, including a short-handed marker by Brandon
Svendsen at 18:49.
Schwab tallied the game-tying goal at 3:30 of the third period
as Josh Sim and Fred Cassiani drew assists. LSSU went on to
out-shoot BGSU 13-11 in the third period, but was out-shot 3-1 in
overtime. The Falcons held a 37-36 shots-on-goal edge for the game.
LSSU goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson (3-2-1), who played for the
second straight night as teammate Pat Inglis rested an ankle
injury, totaled 33 saves. James Perkin's shootout attempt popped
out of Mahoney-Wilson's glove and over his shoulder before crossing
the goal line, but the Laker sophomore turned away shootout
attempts by BGSU's Dan Sexton and Jacob Cepis.
Bowling Green State came out flying during the game's opening
minutes, garnering the first three shots and forcing Mahoney-Wilson
to make two difficult saves. The Lakers turned the tide and
was the more physical team for the remainder of the opening
period. They built a 3-0 lead on goals by Kyle Haines at 6:04,
Will Acton at 12:19 and Schwab on the power play at 19:38.
It was Haines' first collegiate goal and Acton's first goal of
the season. Nathan Perkovich, Brad Cooper, Zac MacVoy, John
Scrymgeour, Kaunisto and Simon Gysbers picked up assists for the
night.
LSSU finished 1-for-6 on the power play, while BGSU was 1-for-4.
Svendsen led the Falcons with one goal and two assists. BGSU
goaltender Jimmy Spratt totaled 32 saves.
The Lakers, who travel to Notre Dame on Nov. 14 and 15, are now
3-0-0-0 during Friday CCHA games and 0-2-1-1 on Saturdays.
