Bruneteau scores game-winner

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State completed the sweep over Alaska with a 4-2 victory Saturday at the Taffy Abel Arena. The Lakers (15-16-1 overall, 10-13-1-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) swept their third series of the season and finished with a 3-1-0 record against UAF in regular-season play.

The Lakers moved into seventh place in the CCHA with a six-point weekend. The Nanooks (13-13-4 overall, 11-12-3-1 CCHA) sit five points ahead of the Lakers in sixth place with 37 points.

Freshman forward Bryce Schmitt (2-2--4) gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead at 3:19 of the first period with an unassisted goal on a long-range shot up the slot. UAF tied the game 1-1 with a power-play goal from Cody Kunyk.

Domenic Monardo (16-11--27) made it 2-1 for the Lakers. Dan Radke (3-12--15) and Matt Bruneteau (2-3--5) drew the assists. Bruneteau netted the Lakers' game-winning goal with another shot from just inside the blue line at 6:00 of the third period, giving LSSU a 3-1 lead. Bruneteau's two-point game and three-point weekend is his season high points scored.  

The Nanoonks came within one at 9:31 of the third on a goal byNolan Huysmans. UAF failed to score a late-power-play goal or take advantage of the goalie pulled in favor of an extra attacker during the final four minutes. Stephen Perfetto (5-7--12) tallied an empty-net goal at 19:08. Kevin Czuczman (2-7--9) and Andrew Perrault (1-11--12) tallied the assists on the empty-net goal.

LSSU was held to 0-for-3 on the power-play while Alaska was 1-for-7. Junior netminder Kevin Kapalka (6-6-1) made 33 saves for the Lakers. Steve Thompson (2-3-0) stopped 24 shots on goal for the Nanooks.
