Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- Lake Superior State completed its final
home weekend of their inaugural season in the Western Collegiate
Hockey Association with a 4-3 loss to Minnesota State-Mankato. The
loss completes the sweep of the Lakers (16-17-1, 12-14-0 WCHA) by
the Mavericks (21-13-0, 19-7-0 WCHA).
The Lakers came out displaying much more spark than what was
given in last night's loss. Senior Colin Campbell (12-15--27) scored early for the Lakers
off of a deflection from fellow senior Andrew Perrault's (1-7--8) shot from the blue line.
Senior forward Dan
Radke (6-19--25), also playing in his final home game for the
Lakers, was credited with the second assist. The Lakers took their
one-goal advantage into the locker room for intermission while
being outshot 14-11 in the first frame.
The momentum shifted in the second period as the Lakers and
senior goaltender Kevin Kapalka (9-7-1) gave up three goals to the
Mavericks. Johnny McInnis scored the first of his two goals on the
night during the second period. The lone bright spot for the Lakers
in the second period was a goal by Kevin Czuczman (10-11--21) from
a back-door pass by Radke. Freshman standout Alex
Globke (12-19--31) was also credited with the assist.
Globke scored early in the third period following
McInnis' eventual game-winner occurring 1:01 minutes prior. Radke and Campbell both were credited with assists on the Laker's
third goal.
After 46:02 minutes and 30 save in net, Kapalka, was replaced by fellow senior goaltender Kevin Murdock (7-10-0). Murdock blocked all six shots he faced late in the
third period, needing to make brilliant sprawling efforts for a
handful of the saves. With under two minutes to play the Lakers
pulled their goaltender in lieu of an extra attacker. However the
last-ditch efforts were not enough as the Mavericks held firm to
complete the sweep.
Cole Huggins made 27 saves while allowing three goals to give
the Mavericks the win. The Lakers were 2-for-3 on the power play,
while the Mavericks were 1-for-3.
The Lakers will travel to Ferris State next weekend to wrap up
the final weekend series. It is also their final chance to pick up
some much needed points in order to secure a spot in the WCHA
playoffs.
